“And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve…” – Mark 10:44-45 (NKJV)
By worldly standards, this Scripture would make no sense because the world teaches us to be first and to sacrifice others to reach the top. But the Word of God says the opposite, and the Word of God is truth.
But how can I lead with humility? In fact, what is humility? Humility is simply having a modest or low view of one’s importance or freedom from pride and, or arrogance. Jesus consistently modelled humility before His disciples. He sat amongst those considered outcasts of society and sometimes in the homes of the ‘wicked.’
His disciples were not from high society but viewed as uneducated and ‘coarse.’ The Sanhedrin council never accepted Him, yet He served with love and compassion – from healing the sick to washing the feet of His disciples to making the temple available to the poor by throwing out the money changers and huskers. Jesus served the people, never once exalting Himself even though it was within His power. His greatest act of service was dying on the cross for our sins. Jesus endured much and complained not.
The environment within which you serve today, be it your home, job, or church, may be toxic, filled with deceit, strife, or envy. You may feel pushed on every side. But as we are reminded in 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 (NKJV), “We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair, persecuted but not forsaken, struck down, but not destroyed.”
Brethren, in all this, our God is faithful to keep us. So, clothe yourself with humility and serve as Jesus did, according to Ephesians 6:6: “not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.”
As you serve, let it be done justly, with mercy, and with love (Micah 6:8). Jesus has left a legacy for us. Henceforth, serve with humility.
Prayer
Dear God and Father, You are worthy of praise. Your love for me humbles me. I pray this morning that regardless of where You place me, I will serve with humility. Exchange my arrogance regarding others and replace it with Your humble love, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
